Antoine Grimaldi

Antoine Grimaldi , the knight Grimaldi (born October 2, 1697 in Paris , † November 28, 1784 in Monaco ) was the regent of Monaco from 1732 to 1784.

As the originally illegitimate son of his father Antoine von Monaco and the dancer Elisabeth Dufort-Babé , he was recognized by his father in 1715.

The "Knight Grimaldi" ( Chevalier de Grimaldi ), as he was called, was appointed Governor General of Monaco on May 20, 1732, after his brother-in-law Jacques I and his young nephew Honoré had moved to the Hôtel Matignon in Paris and there too Honoré's proclamation as Prince of Monaco in 1734 remained.

This situation lasted until Antoine's death in 1784, when Honoré III. was already 64 years old.

Antoine Grimaldi was known as a capable regent. For example, he managed to avoid participation in the War of the Austrian Succession for Monaco .

Antoine remained unmarried and his remains were buried in the apse of Monaco Cathedral.
