Antoine Le Roux de Lincy (born August 22, 1806 in Paris , † May 13, 1869 ibid) was a French librarian, Romanist and Medievalist .

life and work

Le Roux de Lincy went through the École nationale des chartes and became a librarian at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal and secretary of the Société des bibliophiles français . He is one of the scholars who first renewed the study of the Middle Ages according to the documents in France in the 19th century . As a historian, editor and bibliographer he made a valuable contribution to the knowledge of the history, literature and language of the earlier days of France. Among other things, he published the medieval rhyming chronicle Roman de Brut von Wace , which is important in literary history, as well as Les quatre livres des rois , which is important for the history of the French language ; for the latter edition received the gold medal from the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres . However, its editions no longer meet today's requirements for philological fidelity and accuracy.

Le Roux also made a special contribution to the history of the city of Paris by editing the description of this city given by Guillebert de Metz in the 15th century. As a member of the Société de l'École des chartes , which pursued the goal of reviving the existing Paris Institute for Historical Studies, he co-founded the dignified journal Bibliothèque de l'École des chartes . Through contributions and for a long time as secretary to Jules Quicherat, the editor, he promoted the company's progress sustainably.
