Guillebert de Metz

Guillebert de Metz was a medieval scribe and copyist from the 15th century. He copied numerous manuscripts in his writing workshop, these copies were then illustrated by well-known illuminators from Flanders of his time. One of these painters, whose name is not known, bears the emergency name Meister des Guillebert von Metz due to his frequent collaboration with Guillebert . The master of Jean Mansel , for example, also worked for Guillebert .

In a French edition of Boccaccio's Decamerone, translated by Laurent de Premierfait's and signed by Guillebert, Guillebert's place of residence is given as Geraardsbergen in Flanders. This information can also be found in two other manuscripts written by him, these come from the possession of Philip the Good , whose librarian Guillebert was by his own account.

Guillebert de Metz probably learned his trade in Paris. He is particularly well-known for the description of the city of Paris he wrote himself in the 15th century, the Description de Paris . This was written in 1434 and describes the city under the rule of Charles VI. when Guillebert was studying in town.
