Anton Docher

Anton Docher (* 1852 in Le Crest , France as Antonin Jean Baptiste Docher ; † December 18, 1928 in Albuquerque , USA) is a French Franciscan , missionary and defender of the Indians . He lived in the New Mexico village of Isleta Pueblo for 34 years .

biography

As a seminarian, he was involved in colonial wars in Tunisia and Indochina . He later served as a missionary to the Indians in New Mexico until his death.

During his long stay in Isleta he met numerous celebrities of the time such as the Royal Family of Belgium, Willa Cather , Adolph Francis Alphonse Bandelier and Charles Fletcher Lummis .

In the literature

He was used as the model for the character of Padre Jesus de Baca in Willa Cather's novel Death Comes to the Archbishop . His adventures are told in a novel by Samuel Gance, Anton ou la trajectoire d'un père , published in January 2013. In 2018 author Philippe Morvan is writing a novel, Ours , which has been published by Calmann-Lévy . He says that he took Anton Docher as a role model. And finally, Mary Ellen Snodgrass quotes him as one of the 231 most important pioneers in the conquest of the American West.
