Anton II of Montfort

Count Anton II of Montfort (* October 14, 1635 , † January 14, 1706 in Ingolstadt ), according to alternative counting also Anton the Elder of Montfort , was the guardian of his nephew, Count Anton III from 1686 until the age of majority . von Montfort , administrator of the county of Montfort .

As the Jesuit Andreas Arzet (1604–1675) describes in the last entry of his chronicle about the Counts of Montfort, he taught the young Anton von Montfort "the first foundations of virtue and free arts" until he was sent to a public grammar school. Arzet also writes that Anton von Montfort traveled to Rome in the fall of 1652 to study philosophy and canon law. When the plague reached Naples, he finally returned to Tettnang via Milan in 1657 "fresh and healthy". Instead of a spiritual career, he turned to a career as a soldier, was a lieutenant colonel and later “badly damaged on a foot with a hand grenade” during the siege of Stettin in 1659, but was released after “several weeks by evasion”. Arzet reports that Anton von Montfort then withdrew from the field and became chamberlain at the court of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria . In 1664 Anton von Montfort had again raised a Montfort regiment of 1,800 men against the Turks. In 1669 he finally went to the Bavarian government and became chamberlain in Munich. In 1673 Count Anton von Montfort was "ordered in the Swabian Kraiss via a regiment on foot as the Colonel of the Bavarian Army, but also for Sergeant General", in the course of the military resistance of Emperor Leopold I against Louis XIV of France .
