Johann X. of Montfort

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Count Johann X. von Montfort (* 1627 ; † 1686 in Langenargen ), according to alternative counting also Johann VIII. Von Montfort , was the ruling Count of Montfort from 1655 until his death .

Live and act

According to the Primogeniture , which was only passed in 1652, he followed his father Hugo XVIII. von Montfort before his death as the ruling count. During his reign it was necessary to repair the damage caused by the Thirty Years' War to the burnt-out water castle Argen and to build the so-called Old Castle in place of the destroyed Tettnang Castle . The county, itself badly affected by the war, could hardly provide the necessary funds, so that the reconstruction was partly financed by loans. Despite the tight financial situation, Count Johann managed to acquire the Schomburg manor . This represented the last territorial gain of the Grafschaf Tettnang.

Fatal riding accident

Count Johann died within five days after falling from his horse in Langenargen in front of the former Fridolinskapelle, a memorial stone on the parish church of St. Martin , which his daughter-in-law Anna Maria, née von Thun , donated. His brother Count Anton II. Von Montfort took over for Johann's still underage son, Count Anton III. as guardian of the regency over the still heavily indebted county.
