Anton Lazzaro Moro (born March 16, 1687 in San Vito al Tagliamento ; † March 3, 1764 ibid) was an Italian clergyman and early geologist .

Life

Moro came from a poor background, attended the seminary in Portogruaro and was ordained priest in 1710 . He then delved into the humanities and natural sciences and became director of Feltre's seminar , where he taught philosophy. He then opened a private school in Portogruaro and then in San Vito al Tagliamento. After it was closed in 1758, he became a pastor in Corbolone .

Moro was an early representative of Plutonism , relying on the formation of new volcanic islands in the sea such as Nea-Kaimini in Santorini (1707) and Monte Nuovo off Naples (1538). He explained the formation of the rocks, including the sediments, through volcanic uplift from the sea. According to Moro, this also explained the occurrence of fossils such as crustaceans on today's mountains.
