Antonin Nowotny
Antonin Nowotny ( Czech Antonín Novotný ; born August 22, 1827 in Dobromilice ; † March 9, 1871 ) was a Czech author of chess compositions and a lawyer in Brno .
The Nowotny adjustment
In January 1854 the Leipziger Illustrirte Zeitung published a chess problem on a subject that made its name immortal: The Nowotny Verstell, in short: the Nowotny. The core of this idea is the adjustment of an inclined and a straight black cover line at their intersection with a white sacrificial stone, which creates a double threat . It can only be differentiated by hitting.

Solution:
1. Rf5! 2. Rf4 threatens mate.
1.… Rf8 2. Bf6! The decisive move, which blocks lines f8 – f4 and g7 – e5 at the same time, with a double threat of 3. Rf4 and 3. Re5 mate. 2.… Rxf6 3. Re5 mate, 2.… Bxf6 3. Rf4 mate . The total save 2.… Bxf5 , which parries both threats, can be answered (dualistic) with 3. Ng5 or 3. Nd2 mate .
Further variations that are not typical of Nowotny: 1.… Bxf5 2. Nf7! and the double threat of 3.Nd6, 3.Ng5 can no longer be parried. Or 1.… Ne6 or Nd5 2. Nd2 + Kd4 3. Rd5 mate; 1.… Bxh6, Be5 2. Re5 mate.
It doesn't work: 1. Nf7? Nxb5 !, because now the escape square f5 is free. In variant 1.… Bxf5 it is a question of using a block : Bf5 blocks the only escape square for its king, which is why the white knight can leave this square out of sight for a move.
death
Nowotny died of tuberculosis in 1871 . In the Deutsche Schachzeitung 1871 his age was incorrectly given as 41 years and in various sources the date of his death was 7 March 1871. Jan Kalendovsky found the actual data in the birth register .
