Anton Schmitt (* in Illingen ; † May 31, 1916 Skagerrak ) was a German boatswain's mate in the German Imperial Navy during the First World War .

As a gun leader on the small cruiser SMS Frauenlob , he remained at his post during the Skagerrak Battle, despite being severely wounded. Standing in the water, he fired at the enemy until the ship capsized and went down with his ship.

In his honor the Navy named the destroyer Z 22 Anton Schmitt , which was commissioned in 1939 . He is also named on the Naval Memorial in Laboe .
