Antonina Vasilyevna Nezhdanova ( Russian Антонина Васильевна Нежданова , English transcription Antonina Nezhdanova ; born July 4, jul. / July 16, 1873 greg. In Kriwaja Balka in Odessa , Russian Empire ; † 26. June 1950 in Moscow ) was a Russian opera singer (lyric Coloratura soprano ). She is considered one of the most important representatives of the Russian singing school.

Life

After studying at the Moscow Conservatory , she became a member of the Moscow Bolshoi Theater in 1902 . She could also be seen on the opera stage in St. Petersburg, Kiev and Odessa.

In 1912 she sang with Enrico Caruso and Titta Ruffo in her only foreign engagement in Paris . In the same year Sergei Rachmaninoff dedicated the Vocalise op. 34, No. 14, his most popular composition for solo voice and one of the most famous vocalises of all, to her. In 1936 she began to give singing lessons, in 1943 she became a professor at the Moscow Conservatory.

Antonina Neschdanowa was married to the conductor Nikolai Semjonowitsch Golowanow (1891-1953).

Honors

The asteroid (4361) Nezhdanova , discovered on October 9, 1977, was named after Antonina Neschdanowa in 1991 .

A ship of the Marija Jermolowa class was named after her in 1978.
