Multi-perspective painting

The peculiarity of Antonio Marra's so-called "poly-perspective painting" consists in the lamellar structure of the picture carrier, which Marra paints polychromatically with pure colors. As the genre of painting suggests, the viewer has different visual experiences depending on the perspective. If the viewer walks from one side to the other in front of the work, the picture structures begin to overlap, only to become independent again in new color compositions. Antonio Marra has developed a technique that makes his works appear different from every perspective. In doing so, he applies a cellulose layer to the canvas, the surface of which he then structures with a kind of comb, so that a three-dimensionally protruding groove relief is created. As a representative of Op Art, Antonio Marra creates optical effects with the help of precise, abstract shape patterns. Color overlays result in three-dimensional geometric shapes. The relief-like elaboration of the painting surface forms the basis for the multi-layered perception of his works. Marra's “multi-perspective” painting can be understood as a continuation of Op Art. In his works the two-dimensional picture surface enters the three-dimensional space. Antonio Marra does not create a spatial illusion or optical effects that deceive the viewer, but rather the recipient himself controls the changes in the motifs, colors and shapes on the picture surface through his perspective. His works create a different effect from every location and thus acquire an inexhaustible complexity.

In 2019 Marra received the Audience Award of the International André Evard Prize for his work The Wisdom of the Sea Cucumbers . He shares the audience award with Rüdiger Seidt , whose work Circletetra, 2018 - Cor-Ten also won the audience award. Rüdiger Scheidt was also awarded the General Art Prize.

Marrahaus

The Marrahaus in Heilbronn was inaugurated in 2015 . Antonio Marra was commissioned to design the exterior facade of the building designed by Alexander Schleifenheimer. In doing so, he transferred his principle of multi-perspective painting to the level of architecture. Marra equipped the building with a polychrome facade cladding. Vertically arranged aluminum lamellas form a building skin, the color effect of which changes depending on the viewer's position. For the architectural intervention, Antonio Marra chose colors that appear in the immediate vicinity of the building. A total of 47 colors, which are attached to 16,970 slats, surround the Marrahaus.
