Career

Not much is known about Antonio Tenorio. Tenorio was a Mexican captain who was given command of the city of Anahuac ( Chambers County ) before the outbreak of the Texan War of Independence . He reached Anahuac via Galveston Bay in January 1835 . With him he had two officers and 34 men. General Martín Perfecto de Cos gave him the order to build a customs house there. During the next five months the regiment encountered many difficulties. As a result, Tenorio complained to his manager. A lack of boats and artillery made it difficult to stop the smuggling and the resident traders refused to supply the regiment with supplies. The lack of supplies also made the regiment vulnerable to attacks from colonists who were dissatisfied as tax laws were not consistently enforced. Morale among Tenorio's men was bad, many of whom deserted. When Tenorio caught the trader Andrew Briscoe and DeWitt Clinton Harris (1814-1861) trading in goods not cleared through customs in June 1835 and had them arrested, William Travis set up a company with 25 men to drive the regiment from the garrison . Travis left Harrisburg what part of today Houston ( Texas is) on board the Ohio - a ship that belonged to David Harris. He hoped he would reach Anahuac before Tenorio's men received reinforcements. His company arrived on June 29, 1835, fired a shot and demanded that Tenorio surrender, which was only done after Travis gave the order to advance Tenorio. The terms of the surrender were negotiated on June 30, including a word of honor from the Mexican officers that they would not take up arms against Texas. The weapons were given to the victors. Tenorio and his men then sailed on the Ohio to Harrisburg, where they were ordered to retreat to Bexar . Travis' actions were later criticized across Texas. As a result, he ran an ad in the weekly Brazoria Texas Republican over the next few weeks asking the public to refrain from prejudging until he had time to explain his actions. He wrote it down on September 1, 1835, but it was never published. Tenorio reached San Felipe on July 17, 1835 and stayed there for seven weeks. During this time he received the order from Antonio López de Santa Anna to arrest Manuel Lorenzo Justiniano de Zavala y Sáenz and to bring him to Mexico . He was also supposed to arrest Francis W. Johnson, Robert M. Williamson, Moseley Baker , Travis and other members of the war party. In September 1835, Domingo de Ugartechea ordered him to return to his command in Anahuac.
