Antonio Veneziano (* 1543 in Monreale , † August 19, 1593 in Palermo ) was an Italian poet .

Veneziano came from Sicily and led an adventurous life. In 1578 it fell into the hands of Algerian pirates. He later came to Spain where he met Miguel de Cervantes . Veneziano died in prison. His poems, especially "Celia" in the Sicilian dialect, were very popular. Veneziano also wrote Latin epigrams, Italian prose and many " canzoni ". His poetry was graceful and appealing, despite the obvious reference to Francesco Petrarca .
