The ruins of the old Antoniuskirche stand below the village of Mathon im Schams in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .

history

Construction phases

Written documents about the construction of the Antoniuskirche are missing; a church in Mathon is mentioned for the first time in 831. The ruins of the St. Antonius church ruins that are visible today date from the beginning of the 13th century. On the occasion of an excavation in 1956, a semicircular apse from the late Carolingian era was uncovered, which extended to the choir of the successor building. The numerous fragments found from the pre-Romanesque and Romanesque period are now kept in the depot of the Rhaetian Museum .

Around 1528 the tower was raised. After the new church was built in the village , the old structure was abandoned and began to fall apart. In 1969 the ruins were secured, the tower and choir were re-covered.

Representation by
Jan Hackaert , 1655

The tower with the cantilevered late Gothic bell storey from 1528, the walls of the late Romanesque nave and the recently completed choir with barrel vaulting, the crown height is 3.2 meters. A few sparse remains of paint have been preserved on the right choir wall; on the east wall of the ship, remains of a cube pattern in gray and white can still be seen on the base. Erwin Poeschel suspects that the ship was completely painted.

On the east wall of the tower there are few remains of a monumental painting that reached up to the bell storey, perhaps a representation of Christophorus .

Jan Hackaert's drawing from 1655 gives an impression of the appearance of the earlier church. A gable roof covered the nave and choir, and a wall with a round arched gate surrounded the cemetery.
