Live and act
Penrose is the son of the American photographer Lee Miller and the English surrealist painter and poet Roland Penrose , who co-founded the London Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1947 and was the biographer of Man Ray , Pablo Picasso and Antoni Tàpies , among others . Influenced by his mother, he began taking photos at an early age. Antony Penrose initially dealt with agriculture.
From 1997 he began to sift through the estate of his mother, who died in 1977, which he discovered in the attic of the family home, Farley Farm House in East Sussex. The find, consisting of around 60,000 negatives, prints and manuscripts, became the basis of the Lee Miller Archives . Penrose then published several monographs about his parents, primarily about Lee Miller, whose photographic work thus first attracted public interest. The Lee Miller Archives and the Penrose Collection are kept at Farley Farm House . It is also a museum and gallery under Penrose's direction.
Antony Penrose has written numerous books, articles and two plays about his parents and their contemporaries. In his 2010 children's book The Boy Who Bit Picasso (dt. The boy Picasso bite ) containing photographs Lee Miller and Picasso's works, he describes the story as he was a little boy during a visit to Picasso in 1950 in his parents' house the artist bit and was bitten again by it.
