Antti Revonsuo (born 1963 ) is a Finnish neuroscientist and cognitive scientist , psychologist and philosopher . Revonsuo is Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Skövde University in Sweden and Lecturer at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at Turku University in Finland. He sits on the board of directors of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness and is one of the editors of the journal Consciousness and Cognition . In his specialty, research into human consciousness , he developed the theory of a “virtual dream reality”.

Life

Revonsuo graduated from Turku University in 1990 with a graduate degree . Since 2003 he has been a member of the Academy of Finland .

Revonsuo's research interests include the theory and philosophy of consciousness, neural mechanisms of consciousness and altered states of consciousness . He led two research projects funded by the Academy of Finland on the “Neurophilosophy of Consciousness” (2006-2010) and the “Neurophysiology of Brainreading” (2008-2011). In these projects, the neural mechanisms of altered states of consciousness, in particular of dreams , were examined using EEG and PET, as well as the possibilities of manipulating the transition between conscious and unconscious states with anesthetics .

Revonsuo has the proper function of dreaming research and the so-called Threat Simulation Theory (dt .: threat simulation theory ) set up, according to the dream from an evolutionary perspective is an ancient defense mechanism of evolution was set up to simulate threat scenarios. Since the causes of our fears have to be played through repeatedly in dreams, since fears have the function of warning us of real threats, we would be enabled in the waking state to be able to deal better with actual threats. Revonsuo assumes in his hypotheses that threatening situations, which one encounters while awake, stimulate the system as a whole to actively answer dangerous situations, which in turn leads to an increase in the frequency and severity of such threatening moments in dreams, which increases the probability of success reproduce.

Revonsuo is the European publisher of Consciousness and Cognition magazine .
