The Antuco is a glaciated stratovolcano about 450 km south of Santiago and 100 kilometers east of Los Ángeles (Chile) in Laguna del Laja - National Park in the southern Andes . The summit is at an altitude of 2969  meters above sea level . The first ascent took place in 1829 by Eduard Poeppig and is seen as the birth of mountain sports in Chile. On its slopes there is a small ski area , at its foot there is the lake Laguna de La Laja and a small town called Antuco.

Historical records document several eruptions in the years 1750, 1752, 1820, December 18, 1828, February to March 1845, November 1852 to January 1853 (extraction of 50 million cubic meters of lava), December 1863 and 1869.
