Laguna de La Laja (also known as Laguna del Laja or Lago Laja ) is a lake in the center of Chile . The lake is located in Region VIII , about 100 km east of the city of Los Ángeles . The volcanoes Antuco and Sierra Velluda are located a few kilometers south of the lake in a national park ( Parque Nacional Laguna del Laja in Spanish ), which was established in 1958 and covers an area of 11,600 hectares.
The lake, located about 1370 m above sea level , was created by the lava masses of the Antuco volcano, which blocked off the valley of the Río de La Laja . The water from the lake is used to generate electricity in the El Toro and Abanico power plants. It is also used to irrigate around 100,000 hectares of land.
The volume of the lake is given as 8 (or 5.5 or 7.7) billion m³. In 2013, however, it fell to just 317 million m³ and the water level reached a low of 1305 m, which led to criticism of the power plant operator Empresa Nacional de Electricidad SA Chile (ENDESA) by farmers who rely on the lake for irrigation. ENDESA announced in May 2014 that the power plant would reduce electricity generation to a minimum in order to ensure irrigation.
