Anu Raud (born May 10, 1943 in Moscow ) is an Estonian textile and handicraft artist.

life and work

Anu Raud was born as the daughter of the Estonian writer Mart Raud (1903–1980) and the English scholar and translator Valda Raud (née Aaviste, 1920–2013). She graduated from the Estonian SSR State Art Institute ( Estonian Eesti NSV Riiklik Kunstiinstituut ) in 1967 .

From 1973 to 1995 Raud was a lecturer at the textile department of the Tallinn Art School ( Tallinna Kunstiülikool ). From 1994 to 2001 she was Professor of Textile Art at the Viljandi Culture Academy . In the community of Heimtali , she runs a handicraft museum dedicated to the Estonian textile art, which today belongs to the Estonian National Museum ( Eesti Rahva Muuseum ).

Anu Raud is best known for her weaving and knotting work. In her works she takes up themes from traditional Estonian folk art. From 1973 to 1975 she created the representative tapestries in Tallinn City Hall . Her work Emapuu ("Mother Tree") was a 1995 gift from the Estonian government to the United Nations . She also designs costumes for theatrical performances.

Awards

In 1979 Anu Raud was awarded the Kristjan Raud Prize and in 1981 the award “Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR ”. She is an honorary citizen of Kihnu Island .
