Anwar Nusseibeh
Anwar Nusseibeh ( Arabic أنور نسيبة, DMG Anwar Nusaiba ; * 1913 in Jerusalem ; † November 24, 1986 ibid) was a Palestinian nationalist and from 1948 to 1967 a Jordanian politician . He persuaded his son, Sari Nusseibeh , to work with Israel after the 1967 Six Day War .
biography
Nusseibeh was born in Jerusalem and studied law at Cambridge University . He became a judge in the British administration of Palestine .
During the 1948 war, Nusseibeh fought Israeli forces and lost a leg.
He ran for the Jordanian parliament in 1950 and won with an overwhelming majority. In 1965 he became the Jordanian Ambassador to the Court of St. James . During his time as ambassador in London , Nusseibeh maintained a close relationship with the British royal family . He held several key posts in the Jordanian government before Israel took control of East Jerusalem and the West Bank in the 1967 Six Day War. After that he was one of the first Palestinians to make contact with Israel.
During his life he held the following offices:
- 1936: Land Officer of Jerusalem
- 1948: Cabinet Secretary of the “Arab Government for All Palestine” of Haj Amin al-Husseini in Gaza
- 1950: Elected Palestinian MP in the Lower House (House of Representatives) of the Jordanian Parliament
- September 1952: Appointment as a member of the Jordanian cabinet (Minister for Development and Reconstruction, later Minister of Defense and Education)
- 1963: Appointment to the House of Lords (Senate) and Ambassador to the United Kingdom by King Hussein
- 1965: Appointed Governor of Jerusalem
- 1967: Appointment as Jordanian Defense Minister during the Six Day War
Nusseibeh was also a "guardian of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher ".
Nusseibeh died on November 24, 1986 at his home in Jerusalem at the age of 74. He was buried at the gate of the Al-Aqsa Mosque . Thousands of people attended his funeral.
