Aparados da Serra is the name of the mountainous area on the break edge of the plateau to the coastal region on the border between Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina in the south of Brazil , it is one of Brazil's most interesting natural attractions. It borders the Serra Geral , both of which are national parks in the area of the Mata Atlântica .

National park

On December 17, 1959, the Parque Nacional de Aparados da Serra was founded with an area of 102.5 km² in the municipalities of Cambará do Sul and Praia Grande . The biggest attraction is the Cânion do Itaimbezinho , a 5.8 km long and 600 m deep gorge with many waterfalls. Very often fog arises which obstructs the view.

Because of the great differences in altitude, there is both rainforest and highland forest with araucarias as well as extensive raised bog areas .

The fauna is also diverse. Some of the mammals are maned wolf , puma , hedgehog , possums , macaco-prego , howler monkey , graxaim-do-mato , gato-do-mato , ocelot , armadillos . You can also see many birds: king vulture , the beautiful azure raven (Cyanocorax caeruleus), Papagaio de Peito Roxo (Amazona vinacea), cockroaches , Quero-Quero (Vanellus chilensis). The park has tourist infrastructure and it is easily accessible.

Arrival: A bus leaves Porto Alegre for Cambará do Sul once a day at 6:15 a.m. The drive via São Francisco de Paula takes four hours. Another possibility of access is from Torres on the coast via Praia Grande. On this route there is a daily bus from Torres to Cambará do Sul at 16:00. This trip takes three hours.

The access to the visitor center at the beginning of the Cânion do Itaimbezinho is via an asphalt cul-de-sac that branches off the road between Praia Grande and Cambará do Sul on the plateau. The distance from Praia Grande on this largely unpaved slope is around 25 km. The dirt / gravel road can also be driven on by car when it is dry, but the strenuous drive on the partly steeply rising road takes just under an hour.
