The Apeler See is an artificial lake in the municipality of Schiffdorf , district of Cuxhaven , Lower Saxony . It is located about 1 km southeast of Bremerhaven on the railway line to Bremervörde . The lake was created in the early 1970s when the sand from the ice age deposits under the former moor was used for the motorway bed to extract sand as part of the motorway construction (Bremen - Cuxhaven route). Previously there were pastures of the farms in the village of Apeler here.

The approximately 30 hectare lake is used by the fishing club Bremerhaven-Wesermünde eV as fishing waters. The Apeler See is also known as a bathing lake, and nude bathing is common. However, bathing water quality is not officially monitored.
