List of apple varieties

The Åkerö apple (also known colloquially as the autumn apple ) is an old apple variety that is now mainly grown in Sweden , Estonia and the Czech Republic - there in the White Carpathians and the Moravian Karst Mountains . It is the oldest cultivar in Northern Europe and, as the official "landscape apple" of the Swedish Södermanland, is one of the most popular varieties in Central Sweden . At the beginning of the 20th century, the Åkerö apple was Sweden's most widespread winter fruit.

origin

The apple variety probably originated as a chance seedling in the Netherlands in the 15th century and was imported to Sweden in 1759. 1858 we named it after the castle Åkerö in the municipality of Flen in the province Södermanland County , where the oldest known tree of this variety has been growing for at least three centuries. It still bears fruit.

description

Åkerö apples usually have a light yellow, shiny skin with subtle reddish stripes; however, there are also fruits that are completely dark red in color . The pulp of the fine table apple, which has a relatively coarse structure, is firm, white and juicy, has a characteristic aroma and tastes sweet and sour to sweet wine.

As the common name suggests, the fruits of this variety only reach their picking maturity relatively late and are harvested until November. Storage until February is then possible. Basically, the plants do not have any special location requirements, but the motto “The colder the climate, the better the fruit” applies. This is mostly slightly flattened and egg-shaped or cylindrical. The information about the growth of the tree differs greatly: While there is sometimes talk of strong and rapid growth, other sources describe it as rather weak. What is clear, however, is that the trees only bear fruit for the first time after eight to ten years and the yield can then vary extremely from year to year.
