Apple pie is the generic term for all fine baked goods that contain apples as an ingredient in their name. It is one of the classic fruit cakes that is prepared in many different ways. Basically, apple cake can be made as a sheet cake with yeast dough or batter or in a springform pan with shortcrust pastry or batter.

Tart apple varieties such as Boskoop are mainly used for apple cakes , which are cut into quarters and fan-shaped, cut into wedges or grated, depending on the recipe.
