Aphrodite (DJ)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aphrodite (short Aphro ) is the stage name of the English DJ and producer Gavin King.

Life

Gavin King began his music career in the summer of 1988, amid the acid house movement. Together with a friend he ran the "Aphrodite" club. They quickly established themselves as DJs and were booked nationwide as the "Aphrodite DJs". Gavin King later became "DJ Aphrodite".

When British Hardcore emerged in the 1990s, King joined the movement and became one of the jungle's most famous DJs in 1994 . He founded his own label "Aphrodite Records", on which he made a name for himself with the music projects "Amazon II" (together with producer Tony B) and "Aladdin" (together with Mark QED). Gavin King has been described as one of the pioneers of the drum and bass subcategory Jump Up , a form of this music that is particularly memorable and has been very well received.

In 1996, King founded the Urban Takeover Records label with Mickey Finn . Some of the releases became club hits.

As many popular drum and bass DJs retreated underground, King built his position internationally. Remixes for songs by A Tribe Called Quest , Blackstreet , Jungle Brothers , Fugees and Luniz made him and his music known in the USA .

In 1999 the mix album "Aphrodite" was released. The great success enabled King a world tour.

Aphrodite always performs live as a DJ. He does not play live acts (club concerts), but uses raw versions of new studio tracks for his appearances.
