Apocalypse is Bill Callahan's third albumto be released under his real name. Overall, however, it is already his 14th album. It was released on April 5, 2011 on Drag City . It was produced by the famous producer John Congleton.
The simple cover shows an excerpt from the painting "Apocalypse at Mule Ears Peak, Big Bend National Park in West Texas" by Paul Ryan. Callahan used the album cover and had Ryan use songs from him in a documentary in return.
reception
Mike Powell of Pitchfork Media awarded the record eight out of ten points on April 8, 2011. He writes in his review:
"Callahan has nothing to add to the general conversation about music in 2011 but is making the best albums of his career. And despite the superficial changes he makes to his sound or focus, everything he's done ends on similar gestures: a stare, a nod, and the quiet question of whether trying to get to the heart of something is the same thing as actually getting to it . "
“Callahan doesn't add anything to the discourse on music in 2011, but he's currently making the best albums of his career. And despite the superficial changes in his music or his emphases, everything he does amounts to similar gestures: a stare, a nod, and the quiet question of whether trying to get into the heart of things is perhaps the same as actually getting there . "
Andy Gill from the Independent praises the album for its atmospheric unity and closeness to the listener. “The songs are cemented in delicate arrangements of piano, guitar and flute, handled like watercolors.” Gill awarded the album four out of five stars.
