The aponogeton distachyos ( Aponogeton distachyos ) is an amphibious living plant from the family of the water ear plants .
description
The plant forms a tuber. The leaves are linearly ovate and grow out of a rosette.
Occurrence
The plant has its natural range in South Africa . It is also naturalized as a neophyte in many countries . It can be found in the waters of New Zealand, France and Great Britain, among others.
Use in the aquarium hobby
The plant is not suitable for tropical aquariums as it cannot withstand high temperatures. In contrast, it can be looked after in a cold water aquarium. However, the plant only forms floating leaves .
In specialist shops, however, the plant is often offered for planting garden ponds and is regularly cared for in botanical gardens . However, because of its tendency to become wild, care must be taken that it does not end up in natural waters. The targeted anointing , i.e. H. Application in such waters is subject to approval according to § 41 of the German Federal Nature Conservation Act.
Use as a vegetable
In South African cuisine, the flowers of the two-year water ear are called Waterblommetjie ( Dutch / Afrikaans for "water flower") and are eaten as a vegetable.
The plants are grown in specially designed shallow ponds. The flowers are picked in winter and spring; they are available as seasonal fresh vegetables or canned all year round.
The Waterblommetjies in soups and stews are used - (in particular in the Potjiekos prepared) Waterblommetjie Bredie .
The intense taste is that of green beans.
