Apoo Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apoo is one of the two big festivals in western Ghana . It is celebrated annually in April / May in cities like Techiman , Nkoranza and Wenchi and in November in Nwoasi .

It originated in Bono-Manso , the capital of the historic Bono Kingdom .

According to oral tradition, the word derives Apoo from the verb Po from which to reject or refuse (ger .: reject ) means. The festival is directed against all evil such as catastrophes, fear and curses.

Apoo is a kind of carnival, during which men dress up as women (and vice versa). Local and national authorities are jokingly but relentlessly confronted with popular opinion; cases of corruption are particularly denounced. However, it is also about reconciliation: Family feuds are preferably settled during the Apoo.

The highlight of the Apoo is the pageant of the local king ( Omanhene ) through the city.

In 2004, local AIDS / HIV organizations in Nkoranza warned of the further spread of the HI virus in the region on the occasion of the Apoo Festival .
