Arabo Haflinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Arabo Haflinger or Arabohaflinger is a cross between Arabs and Haflingers (mostly Arab stallions and Haflinger mare). As crossbreed products, the animals lack stable breed characteristics. They are not a breed of horse in the hippological sense .

Breeding history

In the years from approx. 1960 to approx. 1980, Arabohaflingers were used in Haflinger breeding for refinement. The horse breed Arabian Haflinger arose from the crossbreeding attempts in Austria . Refined Haflingers with a limited proportion of Arabian blood have been listed in Germany as an independent noble Haflinger breed since 2006 . Up until the opening of the studbooks for these officially recognized horse breeds, refined Haflingers were sometimes referred to as "Arabohaflingers", since then this term has been out of date in this context. Although the graft breeding is considered complete and should be further bred in the breeding associations within the herd, there are still isolated crosses and their offspring outside the stud books.

description

Haflingers already have Arabian blood ( ox ) in their veins, but much less than the Arabo Haflinger. By crossing Arabs and Haflingers, a slender horse type, a versatile and undemanding riding horse in a small horse frame with a height of 138 to 148 cm should be created. The aim of the cross is an elegant, small riding horse in a rectangular format with typical Arabic features such as the dry, short head, the concave profile and the large, clear eye. The neck should be long enough, well set and light in the poll, the sloping shoulder long and well muscled, the pronounced withers reaching long into the back, the body strong, the chest wide and deep, the sloping croup well muscled, the feet and legs dry and correct, the limbs correct with large joints and medium-length pasterns and the hooves well-formed. The fox color with the golden outer hair and the blonde long hair of the Haflinger predominates and is desirable, but there are also duns and other colors, including mold, quite often.

The mating of Arabian stallions and Haflinger mares is not entirely unproblematic: the offspring often have an inharmonious physique (weak hindquarters, too powerful heads) or simply too much temperament for the strong physique and are not suitable for children and beginners. The Arabo-Haflinger has often lost a lot of the Haflinger's calmness due to the mating with the Arab, but is therefore also better suited for sport, as the slight nervousness also leads to increased attention. A successful crossing is frugal, uncomplicated, sociable, enthusiastic, strong-nerved, healthy and has a good character and a balanced temperament. Good Arabo Haflingers are reliable riding and driving horses for children and adults with hard-working, rhythmic, expansive basic gaits and good thrust.

The pedigree certificates are kept in Germany at the Breeding Association for German Horses eV (ZfdP) in Verden (Aller) . In the first three generations, it must be ensured that the proportion does not fall below a minimum of 25% of the initial population. If the Haflinger exterior is preserved, the proportion of noble blood is usually a maximum of 37.5%. In the future, the resulting breeding line is to be used for further breeding without additional Haflinger blood and with only a little Arabian blood.
