Araschnia doris is a butterfly fromthe noble butterfly family (Nymphalidae). It is widespread in China and shows a seasonal dimorphism like the closely related map ( Araschnia levana )that also occurs in Europe.

description

The males of Araschnia doris have a wingspan of 50 to 55 millimeters, the females 45 to 58 millimeters. The summer form forma (abbreviated f.) Doris is similar to that of Araschnia burejana f. fallax , the wing shape is more rounded. The black upper side of the wings of the males has a red and yellow markings. The middle interrupted band of the forewings and the whole middle band of the hind wings are broad and yellowish. The females resemble the males, only the drawing is wider and often converges at the edge of the forewings.

The underside of the wing also looks f. similar to fallax , but the middle band of the forewings is more irregular, that on the hindwings is crossed by a black line. The brown band is narrower and consists of five spots on each wing. On the forewing, the first spot is irregularly shaped, the second has a small white point, the third is the smallest and is covered almost entirely in white, the fourth has a small white point and the fifth has a small white point on the inner edge. On the hind wing the spots are oval with a black center, which is cored white on the second and fourth and cored purple on the fifth.

Way of life and distribution

Araschnia doris occurs in Chang-yang and Ychang in central China and in Moupin , on the Emei Shan , Wa-ssu-kow and Pu-tsu-fong in western China. The spring generation flies from March to early May and the summer generation in June and July.

Systematics

Araschnia doris f. Doris was first described by John Henry Leech in the first volume of Butterflies from China, Japan and Corea in 1892. Araschnia burejana leechi Oberthür , 1909 is the spring form of A. doris , as has been proven by genital examinations . The species Araschnia zhangi Chou , 1994, described only by one female, is an aberration of the summer form and therefore a synonym .
