Arash Sadeghi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arash Sadeghi ( Persian آرش صادقی Arasch Sadeghi ) is an Iranian human rights activist and political prisoner known for his long hunger strike (more than 68 days) in protest against his wife's illegitimate detention. Arash was a student at Allameh Tabatabaei University in Tehran. He was suspended from the university because of his political activities.

Political activities

Arash Sadeghi campaigned for basic democratic rights in Iran at his university.

Death of his mother in a raid

Arash Sadeghi was first arrested on July 9, 2009, following the 2009 presidential election in Iran for protests against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad . He was released from custody after 90 days. He was arrested again in December of the same year.

During a raid in 2010, Iranian government security officials ransacked his family's home. Arash Sadeghi was not found. His mother suffered a heart attack during the raid and died in hospital a few days later. The security forces involved in the operation did not provide first aid and failed to call an emergency doctor.

Charges in 2013 and 2016

In 2013 he was sentenced to 19 years in prison for " anti-government propaganda , defamation of the supreme leader and threats against national security ".

Arash went on a hunger strike on October 24, 2016 to protest his wife's arrest. His wife, Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee , had been detained for an unpublished short story (about stoning in Iran). Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee had handwritten the short story in her personal diary, which was seized by government security officials during a raid. She also posted Facebook posts about political prisoners. The Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee to six years in prison for "insulting Islamic sanctities" and "spreading propaganda against the system." She was sentenced in absentia because she was hospitalized due to illness on the day of the trial and the court denied her request to adjourn the trial.

According to Amnesty International , Arash Sadeghi and Golrokh Ebrahimi Irae were tortured and otherwise ill-treated in prison .

The federal government's human rights commissioner, Bärbel Kofler , then called on Iran to guarantee "fair, constitutional procedures" for Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee and other imprisoned government opponents and not to restrict freedom of expression . "As long as this is not guaranteed, those affected are to be released from custody."

Twitter campaign

On the 68th day of his hunger strike, Iranian Twitter users launched a broad campaign to draw attention to the critical condition of Arash Sadeghi. The awareness campaign has the hashtag #SaveArash. #SaveArash was the number 1 trend on Twitter worldwide on December 30, 2016 .
