Arbaoua ( Arabic عرباوة, DMG ʿArbāwa , Central Atlas Tamazight ⴰⵄⵕⴱⴰⵡⴰ Aɛṛbawa ) is a small town in northern Morocco in the province of Kénitra in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region and at the same time an important site for the prehistory of North Africa. The place is located 12 km from Ksar el-Kebir, on the road that connects this place with Kénitra.
In the surrounding area there is one of the largest sites of eucalyptus and oaks in Morocco with an area of 35,000 hectares , more precisely of Quercus faginea Lamk . This species is found mainly in the far north of the country, Arbaoua is the southernmost distribution area on the Tangier peninsula.
history
A settlement was discovered here in the 1920s that dates back to Roman times and was on a road. A miliarium that was discovered between Ksar el-Kebir and Arbaoua also dates from Roman times . It is one of the extremely rare spacer stones in the Roman province of Mauretania Tingitana .
On November 27, 1755, the Meknes earthquake occurred , which had similarly destructive effects as the much better known Lisbon earthquake of November 1.
During the French colonial period from 1912 onwards, Arbaoua was a border post against the Spanish north of the country.
