Work educators (also often called work therapists) plan and design work educational and work therapy measures for people with and without disabilities with the aim of integrating them into the world of work and consolidating, promoting and maintaining existing skills and abilities. Today, they are not only active in workshops for people with disabilities, but also in the educational sector, psychiatric hospitals, criminal assistance, integration measures and all facilities with a psychosocial background.

The job description of the labor educator was developed in the 1950s, the training to become a labor educator was officially recognized in 1960.

The training lasts two years and is based on the private school laws of the federal states concerned and the training and examination regulations issued for this profession in two different forms, which, however, are not offered at all schools at the same time:

  1. 2 years full-time with a subsequent one-year internship (year of recognition) in a suitable practical facility or
  2. 3 years in a dual form with an integrated internship.

Both training courses contain 1,800 hours of theoretical training and guided specialist practice or specialist practical tasks under qualified guidance in the above. Fields of activity totaling 600 hours. The training ends with a state examination. After passing the exam and completing the internship or after completing the three-year training, an application is made for state recognition and granted by the regional council after a successful examination interview.

Professional Association of Labor Educators

In order to guarantee the high quality standards of this profession, several vocational schools for work education have come together to form a federal working group. A binding education plan with the standards of vocational training was developed and published together. The member schools of the Federal Working Group see it as their task to ensure practical training at a high level. They achieve this by embedding the classic subjects in learning areas that support networked and case-related teaching.
