The founder of the arboretum in 1860 was Count Marko von Bombelles , a globetrotting aristocrat. He brought a large number of exotic trees and plants from all over the world and established a park around the castle. It remained in the possession of the Bombelles family until 1945 and was looked after by state institutions after the Second World War. Today the facility is managed and maintained by the local agricultural and veterinary school.
