The Trueperella pyogenes bacterium is a common colonist of the skin and mucous membranes of many animal species, but is also one of the most important opportunistic pathogens in ruminants and other animal species. The cells vary in shape depending on the medium, for example cocci , but also short, rod-shaped cells appear. The size ranges from 0.2 to 0.9 × 0.3 to 2.5 micrometers. They are immobile and do not form spores .

Pathogens

Trueperella pyogenes is particularly important as a causative agent of udder infections. Heifers and dairy cows in particular during the drying off period can develop inflammation of the mammary glands ( T. pyogenes mastitis). The prognosis in such cases is usually poor.

Mixed infections with Peptococcus indolicus , Streptococcus dysgalactiae and other spore-free, gram-negative bacteria that live in the absence of oxygen ( anaerobically ) also occur. Abortion , endometritis , liver abscess , osteomyelitis , endocarditis and nephritis are also observed in cattle . Sheep, goats, pigs and humans can also become infected.
