Archaic way

The Archaikweg (Italian: Sentiero arcaico) is a hiking trail in the Stilfserjoch National Park in South Tyrol . It leads from Prad to Stelvio and largely follows the old mule trains - and cart tracks , which are also called Wormisionssteige. For centuries they were used to cross over from the Adige Valley in South Tyrol via the Stilfser Joch to the Valtellina . In several places old cart tracks are clearly visible in the bedrock.

Routing

The marked hiking trail (trail number 11) begins in Prad and leads via Agums and the Patzleid farm to Stilfs . It overcomes almost 600 meters in altitude and reaches its highest point in Gaschlin at 1430 meters. The path is consistently not very steep and at no point exposed or difficult. Depending on your fitness level, you need 2-3 hours to go uphill.

Historical traces

Medieval cart tracks can be seen in several places, which were cut into the rock over centuries by single-axle, two-wheeled carts with iron wheels. The path was used to ascend and descend over the Stilfser Joch until the Middle Ages . On the Gaschlin called saddle 2000 BC. A prehistoric settlement found. Along the way there are several trilingual boards that explain the historical context.
