Archangelos Mikhail (Choli)
Archangelos Michail ( Greek Αρχάγγελος Μιχαήλ ) is a church building of the Cypriot Orthodox Church in Choli ( Paphos district ) in Cyprus .
history
The church, consecrated to St. Michael the Archangel , was built to the east of an older Franconian fortified tower , which was originally taller and which may have been built under the reign of Jacob II (1460–1473). The church itself was built around 1500 as a single-nave church with a semicircular apse in the east. It is probably a church of the Latin rite originally created under the Crusader rule of the House of Lusignan for the needs of Frankish feudal lords .
The church has significant remains of late Byzantine frescoes. The defense tower was converted into a narthex and a portal to the church was added inside, whereby a different floor height was retained.
