Entry to the zoo is free.

history

Deer enclosure in the zoo

The park operated by the city of Klötze was opened in 1964. In that year the bird cages and the monkey house - filled with rhesus monkeys - were built as the foundation stones for the zoo. In June 2004 there was a zoo festival on the occasion of the 40th anniversary. In 1966, the city began to build the outdoor enclosure. Two brown bears were also kept until summer 2012. Since then they have lived in the Müritz Bear Forest .

In September 2013, plans were presented to rebuild and significantly expand the zoo and transform it into the Altmark Zoo . However, stocking should be restricted to native species. In 2016 the 10 million euro project was discarded and the original enthusiasm for it was characterized as “naive”. A working group was set up to deal with the future of the park. The aim is to reduce the number of animals due to non-compliance with legal regulations and limited financial resources. The establishment of a support association is intended to prevent the zoo from being closed and, for example, to increase its attractiveness moderately with the construction of a playground.
