Archibald Douglas, 1st Duke of Douglas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Archibald Douglas, 1st Duke of Douglas (* 1694 - July 21, 1761 in Queensberry House, Edinburgh ) was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

Archibald was a son of James Douglas, 2nd Marquess of Douglas , and his second wife Mary Kerr. He followed his father in 1700 as Marquess of Douglas . 1703 he was raised to the Duke of Douglas . During the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 he sided with the government and helped with the suppression. He also fought in the battle of Sheriffmuir on November 13, 1715.

The Duke fled to Holland after putting John Ker to death at Douglas Castle in 1725 under unexplained circumstances. After Douglas Castle burned down in 1755, the Duke had it rebuilt under the direction of Robert Adam . The construction work was not yet completed when the Duke died.

Since Douglas had no children from his marriage, the dukedom expired again. The older titles Earl of Angus and Marquess of Douglas fell to James Douglas-Hamilton, 7th Duke of Hamilton , after years of controversy , as Archibald had designated his nephew Archibald as his heir in his will .
