Life

In addition to his work as a painter, Gittes was also active as an author of art-historical treatises. He lived in Gènova on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca from 1932 to 1948 . During the Franco dictatorship his works were considered "degenerate". During this time he therefore created many landscape paintings , especially with views of the island of Mallorca. He was friends with the British writer Robert von Ranke-Graves .

After Gittes left Mallorca, he returned to the island regularly for visits from 1980 onwards, as his son lived in Palma . His works can be found in museums and private collections, including the Mallorcan museums Es Baluard and the Museo de Mallorca .
