Es Baluard is the new museum of the city of Palma for modern and contemporary art .

In the Catalan language , baluard means “ bulwark ” and thus refers to the location and the historical function of the building originally located at this point. The meaning of a stronghold of art also resonates in the name Es Baluard .

The museum is located in a corner bastion of the Renaissance city ​​wall on Passeig Marítim in Palma on the Balearic island of Mallorca .

The museum was built as a new building within an old fortification of the Renaissance city wall. The fortress known as Baluard de Sant Pere in the old town of Palma was in a state of decline. The willingness of the city administration to make this bastion available for the construction of a museum for modern and contemporary art solved the problem of space for the art collections and contributed to the urban dynamism of the entire zone. The museum opened on January 30, 2004.

The museum with a total area of ​​5,000 m² is connected to the city on different levels by different routes. It extends over three floors, the different levels are connected by ramps, balconies and galleries, and skylights let in daylight. A route leads from the city through the Porta de Santa Catalina with the viewpoint to the sea and from there to the Sant Pere district and the Paseo Marítimo boulevard. Another path leads to the top area of ​​the city wall, from which the bay of Palma and the museum itself can be seen. A visit to a museum therefore also enables a visit to a historical monument, on whose terraces spectacular views open up: of the city and the cathedral , towards the Mediterranean Sea and the Castell de Bellver .

Events

The museum also offers cultural and didactic activities. The main objective is to expand the collections and to make them known, to strive for maximum closeness to the public, for example through special tours and workshops for families to familiarize the youngest with the technology of artistic design, as well as the parents. All of these activities are free, as are the lecture series in the museum's program.
