from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Archimedes is a former Swedish company that was the first to introduce an outboard motor in 1907 , and it became famous for this design. Archimedes has now been absorbed by Volvo Penta after it was bought by Electrolux in 1941 .

In 1912 Archimedes started series production of the 2.5 hp Balans motor (BS for short), which was sold very successfully and was soon replaced by the twice as powerful BSII. During a Baltic exhibition in Malmö , the kings of Sweden and Denmark rode a boat powered by Archimedes engines. Archimedes dominated the Swedish outboard motor market during the 1930s, and the motors also celebrated success in ship races.
