Roman and Renaissance: the Coimbra aqueduct

The Arcos do Jardim (dt .: "arches of the garden") are the most visible part of the aqueduct Aqueduto de São Sebastião in the Portuguese city of Coimbra .

The original structure was built under Roman rule to supply water to the city of Aeminium .

During the Migration Period , the Suebi destroyed the neighboring bishopric of Conimbriga , whose name and function were then passed on to Aeminium. After the mutual conquests of Coimbra in the conflicts between Christians and Moors , the aqueduct was in ruins.

During the reign of Sebastian I , the engineer Filippo Terzi (port .: Filipe Terzi ) , who came from Bologna in Italy, built today's aqueduct in 1583. Using the old foundations and many antique building blocks, the work was largely a restoration and only took a few months.
