Innes Chonnel Castle , also Ardconnel Castle , Innis Chonnell Castle or Connel Castle is a castle ruin an island castle on the small Scottish island Innis Chonnell in the lake Loch Awe . The structure takes up a large part of the island. It is classified as a Scheduled Monument .
history
In 1315 Cailean Mór ( Colin Campbell ) received large lands in what is now the Council Area Argyll and Bute . Ardchonnel Castle was likely built in the first half of the 13th century by members of the Campbell clan . In the 15th century, extensive renovation work was carried out in the area of the castle courtyard, although the area of around 25 m × 25 m remained almost unchanged. Ardchonnel Castle was the main castle of the clan until the late 15th century, when it was replaced by the newly built Inveraray Castle . Nevertheless, it was still used by members of the allied clan MacLachlan . Little is known about the history of Ardchonnel Castle and when it was ultimately abandoned. It is only recorded that it was already in a ruinous state in 1806.
