Ardlamont Point from the east

Ardlamont Point , also Aird Lamont , is a cape in the south of the Scottish Cowal Peninsula and thus administratively belongs to the Council Area Argyll and Bute . It separates the inlet Loch Fyne in the west from the strait of Kyles of Bute in the east and marks the southernmost point of Cowals. This region of the peninsula is very sparsely populated and there are no settlements at Ardlamont Point itself. The closest village is the small, three kilometers northwest of Ardlamont , which has formed around the property of Ardlamont House . However, there is evidence of earlier headland settlement in the form of cup-and-ring markings discovered on a greywacke . Ardlamont Point is believed to have been the scene of a battle between members of the local Lamont clan and troops from Mull Island .

Several shipping accidents have been recorded at Ardlamont Point over the past two centuries. In March 1868 , Margaret, who came from Glasgow , sank at Ardlamont Point with a load of coal. In October 1860 , Jean from Furnace , who came from Greenock , crashed on the way to her home port on the headland. The following day, the bodies of two crew members were washed ashore. The ship had stones loaded. Isabella , also registered in Greenock, ran aground at Ardlamont Point in March 1870 and had to be abandoned. She had loaded saltpetre and sulfur.
