Argeios (Centaur)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Argeios ( ancient Greek Ἀργεῖος ) is a centaur of Greek mythology .

He appears in Diodorus as part of Herakles ' third task , in which he has to catch the Erymanthic boar . During his search for the boar, Heracles is welcomed and entertained by the centaur Pholos . Four generations earlier, Dionysus had buried a wine barrel in the cave of Pholos , which may only be opened when Heracles arrived. When Pholos opens the barrel, the nearby Centaurs go mad because of the strong smell of the wine and want the wine for themselves. A fight ensues between the Centaurs and Heracles, in which the cloud Nephele , the ancestor of the Centaurs, supports this rain with a four-legged being. Nevertheless, Heracles manages to kill part of the Centaurs and to drive the other part to flight. Argeios is counted among the Centaurs who are killed by Heracles. Diodorus names Daphnis , Amphion , Hippotion , Oreios , Isoples , Melachaites , Thereus , Doupon and Phrixos as Centaurs who were also killed .
