Argeliers León

Argeliers León Pérez (born May 7, 1918 in Havana ; † February 23, 1991 ibid) was a Cuban musicologist and pedagogue, folklorist and composer.

León studied music at the Conservatorio Municipal de La Habana and later education at the Universidad de La Habana . In addition, he began studying musicology and ethnology at the Escuela de Verano of the University a. a. with Fernando Ortiz . He also took composition courses with José Ardévol and in 1957/58 with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

From 1939 to 1957 he taught harmony and composition at the Conservatorio Municipal de La Habana . In 1951 he gave courses at the Escuela de Temporada in Santiago de Chile. In 1958 he became director of the music department of the Biblioteca Nacional .

From the beginning of the 1960s he concentrated increasingly on musicological research and became one of the most important folklorists in Cuba alongside Odilio Urfé and María Teresa Linares . He became the founding director of the Department of Folklore at the Teatro Nacional de Cuba and the Instituto de Etnología y Folklore of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba. Here he founded the Seminar for African American Studies in 1968 . For UNESCO he organized colloquia on African culture a. a. in Nigeria, Ghana, Mali and Brazil. In 1973 he became director of the music department of the Casa de las Américas .

León was the founder and editor of a number of musicological magazines such as Actas de Folklore , Etnología y Folklore , Boletín de Música de Casa de las Américas and Boletín de Música de la Biblioteca Nacional “José Martí” . In addition to numerous articles, he wrote the books Introducción sobre el estudio del arte africano and El canto y el tiempo . As a composer, he wrote both symphonic and chamber music works.

León's students include the musicologists and ethnologists Rogelio Martínez Furé , Olavo Alén , Jesús Gómez Cairo , Danilo Orozco , Adalberto Suco , Pedro Martínez , Jesús Guanche , Alberto Alén , Rolando Pérez , Victoria Eli , Zoila Gómez and Grizel Hernández .
