The Argentine-Swiss relations have developed since the independence of Argentina from Spain .
Diplomatic relations
The Switzerland maintains a since 1834 consulate in Buenos Aires . In 1891 she opened the first diplomatic mission in South America there .
Economic relationships
Before the independence of Argentina, trade was almost meaningless. The transport of goods was under the control of Spain, which had banned direct trade between the viceroyages and third countries. The opening of a subsidiary in Buenos Aires in the 1820s by a group of Swiss textile manufacturers marked the beginning of Argentine-Swiss trade relations.
In 2016, Switzerland imported goods worth 1.3 billion francs, mainly precious metals and agricultural products, from Argentina. Swiss exports to Argentina totaled 664 million francs and mainly concerned pharmaceutical and chemical products, machines and watches.
