The relations between Switzerland and the United States are characterized by the very different size of the two countries.

Diplomatic relations

The USA has had a diplomatic mission in Switzerland since 1853 , and Switzerland in the USA since 1882. Consular relations have existed since November 30, 1829 . The first Consul General of the United States in Switzerland was the German-born John Godfrey Boeker , who began his service in Basel in October 1830 . Conversely, Switzerland had consular representatives in the United States since 1822, one in New York City and one in Washington, DC

Switzerland is the protective power for bilateral relations between the United States and Cuba and, since the hostage-taking of Tehran, for the interests of the United States in Iran .

The American ambassador in Bern ( Madeleine M. Kunin ) has also been accredited to the Principality of Liechtenstein since 1997 .
