Argumenty i Fakty , abbreviated AIF ( Russian Аргументы и Факты , abbreviated АИФ; German: "Arguments and facts") is the most widely read Russian weekly newspaper .

history

The paper was founded in the Soviet times in 1978 to provide editors with those statistics and figures that were difficult to find in the official press as a propagandistic argumentation aid . At the time of Glasnost it was the world's largest circulation newspaper and as such was entered in the Guinness Book of Records in May 1990 with a circulation of 33.5 million copies. The release of print and paper prices under Yegor Gaidar ended indirect state subsidies for all Russian print media . This also significantly reduced the number of copies of Argumenty i Fakty.

facts and figures

Argumenty i Fakty appears in A3 format in color. According to its own information, the circulation is now 2.98 million; thus the newspaper reaches around ten million readers. The figures from the independent media research institute Comcon are much more modest, but they also show Argumenty as the most widely read Russian weekly newspaper (1st half of 2006): 7.66 million readers.

Nikolai Sjatkov is the editor-in-chief. The Argumenty i Fakty are published by the publishing house of the same name, owned by Promswjasbank . The publishing house publishes a number of regional editions for Moscow , Saint Petersburg , Tbilisi , Georgia and Belarus, as well as the AIF Europa magazine (Russian: АИФ Европа, AIF Jewropa ). There are also thematic offshoots on the topics of health, dacha , mothers and daughters, family, and an edition for children. The main sheet, which is published nationwide in Russia, is supplemented by a local supplement in the individual regions; there are a total of 25 of these regional supplements.

The thematic offshoots also have a comparatively high number of readers: AIF Health (Russian: АИФ Здоровье) has 1.5 million readers, the Datschen-AIF (Russian: АИФ На даче) 581,000, AIF Superstars (Russian: АИФ суперзвезды) 484,000, AIF Mothers and Daughters (Russian: АИФ Дочки-матери) to 434,000 and the AIF for longevity (Russian: АИФ Долгожитель) to 265,000 readers.
